An Organic Farm Startup

We were originally brought onto the PHL team as part time landscapers- the owners had purchased the 3 acre property a couple years prior with the intention of developing it into a farm, and wanted to restore the overgrown gardens first. We removed invasive species, pruned and retrained overgrown plants, and turned the damaged grass into a well kept lawn. We quickly transitioned into a full time managerial role when the herd of goats living on the property fell sick, coordinating emergency veterinary care and taking over further goat management (previously contracted out through Ulupalakua Ranch). As farm managers, we worked with the owners to transition the residential property into a producing farm. This 9 month project included clearing cane grass & bamboo, cleaning up stands of bananas, hillside terracing, "pig-proofing" the property, installing irrigation, pruning avocado, citrus, & macadamia trees to maximize health & production, establishing compost systems and much more. We designed and landscaped out multiple beds and gardens, maintaining the owners' vision of a crescent theme, including a succulent garden, a protea hedge and "maze", a wildflower bed, a vegetable garden, and a kitchen herb garden (we coordinated with Ulupalakua Ranch to create a live edge raised bed). We are most proud of the orchard we designed, sourced, and installed including 25 citrus trees, 9 olive trees, and 2 mango trees. Upon completion of garden design and installation projects, we worked with the owners to transition into a cost-effective long term model, leaving an incoming maintenance crew with detailed workflows and management schedules.
